Latest thought on tetanus boosters?
Thoughts have indeed changed over the years. It is now thought that provided you have had your 5 routine boosters, (3 as an infant, the pre-school booster and another in your teens,) that additional boosters may put you at more risk of an adverse reaction than the the actual risk of tetanus, so they are no longer recommended. They should also no longer be suggested for minor injuries, the famous rusty nail or minor animal bite. Exceptions are wounds that occur on farm land, where the risk of contamination from animal faeces is high, and incidents that involve significant skin damage, such as major RTAs.
